We were driving back through various scenic points at Lassen Volcanic National Park, with music from the LOTR Symphony reminding us of how virtualguidebooks.com/NorthCalif/MountLassen/LassenParkRo… at the foothill of Mt Lassen and two other peaks (Pilot Pinnacle and Mt. Diller, I presume). Beautiful place. I only wonder how amazing it would be in spring (Warning: QT). Turquoise blue waters so clear that you could see the river bottom even without a polarizer surrounded by three volcanic / rocky peaks make for an amazing scene. Only addition of some clouds and snow to go would make this view better.

Even now, I kick myself for not having come here for sunrise.

This is the future. A human genome decoded by an external service provider (Complete Genomics, www.completegenomics.com) and delivered digitally to your doorstep via Amazon Web Services and their neat high-scale cloud data ingest/export service acting as fulfillment providers.

This box contains a disk drive holding the genome from NA19240, a Yoruban female and the related data that compares it to NCBI Release 37 of the Human Reference Genome

Total size is about ~350 gigabytes. The plan is to use this sample data set in a series of upcoming experiments involving large scale data movement and cloud platform ingest/export.

The Southern Lapwing (Vanellus chilensis) is a wader in the family Charadriiformes. It is a common and widespread resident throughout South America, except in the jungles of the Amazon and the Andes. This bird is particularly common in the basin of the River Plate. Vagrant individuals can also be found in southern Central America.
It is the national bird of Uruguay, where it is called tero. Due to its bold and pugnacious nature it has become the namesake and mascot of the Uruguay national rugby union team, Los Teros. In Brazil it is widely known as quero-quero.

Guarujá is located in Santo Amaro island, situated in São Paulo shore. Its main economic sources are seasonal tourism and port related activities..
Guarujá is a popular weekend destination for families from São Paulo, which can get there driving in less than an hour (through the Imigrantes highway). Traffic gets heavy during the evening in holidays. Guarujá also has relics from history such as the Barra Grande Fortress, built by the colonizers in 1584, the Forte Velho just 8 km from the centre. It accessed by the Santa Cruz dos Navegantes road, or by boat, from the Ponte dos Práticos (Pilot’s Bridge), and the Armação das Baleias, the first industrial plant set up in the state for the extraction of whale oil.

The need for compute horsepower drove John McNeil Studio co-director Brandon Kuchta to try Amazon’s EC2, or Elastic Compute Cloud. The elastic nature of Amazon’s service allowed the McNeil team to instantly dial up or down the amount processing power and storage space required for each phase of the process. After setting up a master computer with Amazon, Kutchta was able to access the processing power of hundreds of computers. They were able to simultaneously render several phases of the animation project.

“With Amazon, it’s pay as you go, so we can fire up 300 machines at once,” said Kuchta. “If we needed them just for a few hours, that’s all we would pay for and then we spin them down until we needed them again.”
