Automotive & Industrial

The Ford Model T (colloquially known as the Tin Lizzie, Flivver, T‑Model Ford, or T) is an automobile that was produced by Henry Ford’s Ford Motor Company from 1908 through 1927. The Model T set 1908 as the historic year that the automobile became popular. It is generally regarded as the first affordable automobile, the car that opened travel to the common middle-class American; some of this was because of Ford’s innovations, including assembly line production instead of individual hand crafting. The first production Model T was produced on August 12, 1908 and left the factory on September 27, 1908, at the Piquette Plant in Detroit, Michigan. The Model T was the first automobile mass produced on assembly lines with completely interchangeable parts, marketed to the middle class. Many historians refer to this as a key example of the early beginnings of the industrial revolution.

The Litchfield Plant of the Brown Shoe Company opened in 1917. The wing seen on the left was added in two stages in the 1920s. The factory was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. The property is now managed by the Montgomery County Housing Authority, and will soon re-open as the Brown Shoe Lofts. There will be 47 two and three-bedroom apartments for low to moderate income families.

Litchfield is a city in Montgomery County, and is located off exit 52 on I-55 about halfway between Springfield, Illinois and St. Louis, Missouri. The population of Litchfield was 6,939 at the 2010 Census. Historic U.S. Route 66 runs through the City.

More photographs of Litchfield can be found in my "Litchfield IL" set.

Automobile Photographs
: This is a very large collection of images whose primary, but not exclusive, focus is on American automotive classics. Images are organized by decade, by manufacturer, and by topics (such as convertibles, station wagons, muscle cars, etc.)

Central Illinois (except Springfield)
: Central Illinois (except Springfield): Photos relating to the middle section of the "Land of Lincoln" (except for the Capital City of Springfield) may be found in this collection. Every city and town I’ve photographed is contained within its own set, and rural (as in "countryside") photographs are grouped by county.

Springfield, Illinois
: All of my photographs of Springfield and the Abraham Lincoln Sites are in this collection. For the City of Springfield, there are separate sets for the Capitol Complex, Downtown (including the Old State Capitol), Neighborhoods, Parks, Illinois State Fairgrounds (and past State Fairs), and more. Photographs of Lincoln sites include the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, Lincoln Home National Historic Site, Lincoln Tomb, and so on. Also in the Lincoln "All About Abe" (Set) are a few Lincoln sites not located in Springfield.

The Illinois State Fair
: My collection of photographs of the Illinois State Fair. The fair offers something for everyone. Grab a corn dog and lemon shake-up, and come take a look!

Beyond Central Illinois
: Other locales in the United States and Canada including New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle.

In addition to my location-based sets, here are links to some "topical" collections and sets I’ve put together:

Barbers & Barber Shops
: Traditional barbers and barber shops are on the endangered species list. But there are still plenty to be found if you go looking for them.

Almost Everything Else. Check It Out!!!
: Included topics range from man’s first walk on the moon to small town schools and churches, and from Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers (our favorite breed) to things that are abandoned, neglected, weathered, or rusty.

New Automotive Sensors (Sensor Technology) Review

Automotive Sensors (Sensor Technology)

Automotive Sensors (Sensor Technology)

Sensors are the eyes, ears, and more, of the modern engineered product or system. The modern automobile would not be what it is today without an entire battery of sensors that monitor, and control, everything from engine performance to passenger safety and comfort. This authoritative reference work, part of Momentum Press’ new “Comprehensive Sensors Technology” series, edited by Dr. Joe Watson, will offer a complete review of all sensors and their associated controls systems typically found in the modern automotive vehicle. Readers will find invaluable data and guidance on: automotive ‘telematics’; both on-vehicle sensors as well as outdoor highway sensors for traffic control; power train, ignition control, fuel control, emission control, suspension control, braking and traction control; and, use of capacitive sensors for proximity monitoring. Airbags alone require a complex array of sensors to detect weight, speed, and seat occupant characteristics. Choosing the right type of sensor, for cost, efficiency and durability, is crucial to the entire success of any modern automotive vehicle. This book helps engineers better understand the full range of sensors, from piezoelectric sensors to thermal and flow meters to directional sensors that inform the performance of the vehicle. Author John Turner, concludes his book with future trends in use of telematic sensing systems for traffic control and traffic automation.

Latest Automotive Development Processes: Processes for Successful Customer Oriented Vehicle Development Review

Automotive Development Processes: Processes for Successful Customer Oriented Vehicle Development

Automotive Development Processes: Processes for Successful Customer Oriented Vehicle Development

The book – based on the corresponding graduate course the author held at Clemson University, South Carolina – is a comprehensive, practically oriented presentation of the vehicle development processes. Based on the key question of the product strategy (“Which factors guarantee the product development’s success?”) it characterizes the contents of the different stages, roles and activities during the product development process, the application of project management methods and the networking with suppliers – enriched with the author’s professional expertise. In contrast to the already available textbooks on vehicle development this publication is focused on the integration processes of the overall vehicle development, which means the “orchestration” of the single components for the strategic implementation of customer relevant characteristics of the completed product and to a lesser extent on the optimization of the vehicle components. Furthermore the construction and testing of virtual vehicles concentrating on the geometry-, function- and product-production-integration is broadly discussed.

Industrial designer
Automotive & Industrial

When I first asked this guy he was pretty hesitant. I told him it’d only take a minute and he agreed. I think I’ve gotten a bit better at selling the idea to people without pressuring them into it. Just speaking to people for a bit longer helps. It lets them know that you’re a real person and nothing strange is going on.

Once I had his permission I asked him to move a little so I could get a better background. Unlike with my last stranger I remembered to strike up conversation this time. I went for my normal compsition, aiming for about 1/5th space above his face and about 1/5th torso. He said he’d just off uni where he’s studying industrial design. He’s in his first year which starts out as product design. Next year the course will move into automotive design.

When I had the shots I wanted I handed him the card with Weight of the world on it. He said something along the lines of "Nice stuff man".

I’m approaching the end of my 100 strangers. I began on November 30th and I will post my 100th stranger on March 9th. A few people have expressed interest in getting a copy of my project as a book so I’ll be putting one together. It will contain both photos and the descriptions I’ve written alongside them, so it should be about 200 pages. If anyone out there would like a copy I’m happy to organise one for them. I’ll charge whatever it costs me to get it done, which looks like it’ll be about AUD including shipping. Let me know if you’re interested by leaving a comment or sending me some flickr mail.

This is the ninety fourth portrait of my attempt at the 100 strangers project.

Complete Sustaining Industrial Competitiveness after the Crisis: Lessons from the Automotive Industry Product Review

Sustaining Industrial Competitiveness after the Crisis: Lessons from the Automotive Industry

Sustaining Industrial Competitiveness after the Crisis: Lessons from the Automotive Industry

The economic downturn of 2008-2009 and the disaster that hit Japan in 2011 exasperated the structural problems of the automotive industry, ranging from over-stretched supply chains to excess capacity and pressures to generate more environmentally-friendly products. Car production recovered swiftly from 2008 but several of the largest car manufacturers are in trouble, and the industry suffers from low levels of profitability. This book outlines the status of the industry and analyses the challenges that car-makers are facing, taking advantage of the multidisciplinary and cross-country expertise of the authors. Its chapters underline the importance of emerging markets, not only as drivers of demand growth but possibly also as loci of future innovations.
