A Huge Toolbox

Image by cogdogblog
Flickr has become popular for numerous reasons, one of them being that they provide appropriate interfaces to 3rd party developers to create unique web tools and software applications that can access, retrieve, use the photo data and images stored in flickr. This has created an explosion of interesting (and strange) flickr add-ons.
These three sites above are a good place to start exoloration:
* Flickr Services contains not only information for developers wishing to use the "APIs" that make this possible, there is also an extensive gallery of examples of what people have created based on the flickr architecture.
* FlickrBits is another collection of tools.
* The Great Flickr Tool Collection
Some of my favorites include:
* Mappr map photos by geographic location
* Clockr It’s Flickr Time Digital clock with digits from flickr images
* Flickr Graph
* Flickr Vancouver aerial map
* Flickr Album create a flip photo album
* Spell with Flickr (see example elsewhere in this presentation)
* FlickrPapr make wallpaper images from smaller images
* Tag Related Browser explore the relationship between images
* Color Fields Colr Pickr
* delivr create a digital postcard from flickr images
* bickr
* flickr tag fight
* Flickr Backup download your entire flickr collection for backup purposes
* FlickrStorm a different tool for searching
* Delivr send a digital postcard based on flickr images
* Mastercards with Flickr creates a Concentration like game using flickr images
* montager – creates a montage based on many smaller flickr images — see my dog examples.

Jeff Crouse

Image by eyebeam
Jeff Crouse creates parodies that playfully comment on the role of technology in our lives. His work takes many forms, including software, web applications, installations, games, and video. His piece Invisible Threads, a mixed reality installation about virtual labor, was featured at the New Frontiers Gallery at the Sundance Film Festival in 2007. James Chimpton, a robotic monkey, interviewed the artists of the 2008 Whitney Biennial using information harvested from the web in real time. Another piece, Dirt Party, made people at the 2008 Futuresonic Festival in Manchester confront their online identities by crowdsourcing the task of digging up "dirt" about them from the Internet. His work has also been shown at the DC FilmFest, the Come Out and Play Festival in Amsterdam, Laboral in Gíjon, Spain, the Obie Awards, the Performa Festival, and the Eyebeam Art & Technology Center in New York. He has received grants from Rhizome and Turbulence, and is has been a fellow at Eyebeam since 2007.
Jeff received his MS from the Digital Media program at Georgia Tech in 2006 and then joined Eyebeam as a production fellow in 2007. Outside of Eyebeam, Jeff is a Computing professor at Bennington College, and teaches Code for Art at Parsons.

Here we begin the all nighter that was me documenting my good friend, David Plant’s, effort to get some work done.
David is a Multimedia & Digital Entertainment Degree student, which means he spends a lot of his time bent over computers for hours on end, creating the pieces he needs to, which can range from music videos (which must first be filmed and then edited) to online games.
This subject was to be an analytical representation of the lengths students, often perceived by the media to be nothing but drunkards and layabouts, will go to, to get their work handed in. In the Pandon building of Northumbria University, there is a large computer room, and a room meant entirely for the Media students, as for them the computers are essential; often, the software they need to use is far too expensive to have on their machines at home, and so their work must be done in Uni, where the facilities are. This has lead to an interesting development within a select group of students. The ‘all-nighter’ is well known as a standard part of modern student life, but one that is rarely portrayed in a positive manner. However with these students, it is a night that is relished and looked forward to, a night where they can catch up on some work while simultaneously enjoying the companionship of their friends. The ‘all night Pandon party’ even has its own 225 members strong group (more computers than there actually are in the building). The all nighter is productive and enjoyable.
Or so I am told.
I have realised, over the two Day In The Life shoots that I have done thus far, that it is near-impossible to shoot them without affecting the situations captured therein. Take, for example, my first test shoot, ‘An Afternoon in the Pub’. Although Emma is a frequent visitor to that particular Wetherspoons to enjoy some food and a drink, that particular afternoon would not have happened if I wasn’t there. She specifically asked me if I wanted to go for a drink and something eat after she had finished college in the morning. Therefore, although I was taking a step back and photographing what she would have been doing regardless of whether I was there or not, the fact she was there at all was down to me. This is the unfortunate thing about documenting the days of individuals. Were I photographing an important event, I may be able to simply blend into the background while the scenes unfolded and I quietly took my photographs. With something like this, I must personally ask my subjects if they mind me following them around, generally photographing them.
I have also found myself struggling with the question of aesthetics versus documentation. My photography education and progress has burned within my psyche a sense of how things look better when composed in a certain manner, and so on. It strikes me as whether this is necessary in such a situation. Furthermore, is it actually possible to quickly capture an event occurring when you’re trying to frame it so that it looks ‘nice’? Of course, people like Cartier-Bresson coped fine.
So, I decided to follow David Plant, to see how his afternoon into evening progresses. Still utilizing the function on my 35mm slr that imprints the time onto the negative, I would show how the night goes. This will be a critical study of how time affects the students working in the Pandon computer room.
We began in the pub (Wetherspoons in Newcastle), with a drink to prepare us for the upcoming long haul; skillfully fulfilling the stereotype thus far. We were well aware of how alchohol would not exactly help with keeping us awake, infact more likely the opposite, but such is the way of things. A lot of David’s (or Planty, as he shall henceforth be called) time is spent doing exactly this. Occupying himself with whatever needs to be done in town, then enjoying a drink. This particular shot, i hasten to add, shows him perusing the menu. It was shot using a fisheye lens.

A Great Day At Google!
Some cool Digital Games & Software images:
A Great Day At Google!

Image by Stuck in Customs
So, a fellow photographer at Google named Brian White contacted me through G+ and asked if I wanted to visit the Zurich offices while I was in Switzerland. It just so happened that I am flying out of Zurich, and I took a train from Zermatt yesterday afternoon to meet him.
I met all sorts of interesting people there from Google and from the Google+ team. To see everyone I met and circle them, see the Google+ post about this.
We did a live Google+ Hangout (see photo) from their offices and had people connect from all over the world. We even had a Vietnamese guy in Prague join and play us an acoustic guitar song! It was really fun…
After the Hangout, we went up to the Google library on the top floor of their offices to take this photo together. See those people there on the left? They mostly ignored us. I think this is because they were serious Germans playing a board game. Never play a board game with a German.
The Distant Mist

Image by Stuck in Customs
While in Iceland, I traveled through a lowlands area early in the morning. A mist — a video-game-mist — started moving quickly across the ground and through the distant hillocks. It was all so surreal that I barely remembered that I should be taking a photo of this. That was a strange feeling, since the whole reason I was there was to take photos!
