This is what happens to an ordinary plastic grocery bag when it’s cooked at 1,300° Farenheit for three hours. The identical, perfectly round spheres are composed of pure carbon. Each one is just 2.5 microns across—fifty times smaller than a human hair. Because they are conducting and paramagnetic, they can act as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, as ink components for printers and toners, or to reduce friction in tires.

This IDC study analyzes the results of an IDC QuickPoll survey. The QuickPoll survey was designed to understand the buying behavior for toner/ink cartridges. Specifically, we examined the use of genuine OEM supplies (same brand as the printer or MFP hardware) versus other third-party options. Topics addressed in the study included:

• Past, present, and expected future mix of OEM versus non-OEM cartridge use
• Level of agreement with several perception statements about OEM and non-OEM cartridges
• Use of new versus refilled cartridges
• Levels of satisfaction with different types of cartridges

“While users continue to extol the virtues of OEM cartridges versus non-OEM cartridges, the perceived cost savings of the third-party option are hard to pass up. This latest QuickPoll shows that non-OEM cartridges will make small share gains as users make an effort to save money on printing costs,” says Keith Kmetz, program vice president for IDC’s Hardcopy Solutions research programs.
