Complete Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland First Look

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

This book was converted from its physical edition to the digital format by a community of volunteers. You may find it for free on the web. Purchase of the Kindle edition includes wireless delivery.Source of legend and lyric, reference and conjecture, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is for most children pure pleasure in prose. While adults try to decipher Lewis Carroll’s putative use of complex mathematical codes in the text, or debate his alleged use of opium, young readers simply dive with Alice through the rabbit hole, pursuing “The dream-child moving through a land / Of wonders wild and new.” There they encounter the White Rabbit, the Queen of Hearts, the Mock Turtle, and the Mad Hatter, among a multitude of other characters–extinct, fantastical, and commonplace creatures. Alice journeys through this Wonderland, trying to fathom the meaning of her strange experiences. But they turn out to be “curiouser and curiouser,” seemingly without moral or sense.

For more than 130 years, children have reveled in the delightfully non-moralistic, non-educational virtues of this classic. In fact, at every turn, Alice’s new companions scoff at her traditional education. The Mock Turtle, for example, remarks that he took the “regular course” in school: Reeling, Writhing, and branches of Arithmetic-Ambition, Distraction, Uglification, and Derision. Carroll believed John Tenniel’s illustrations were as important as his text. Naturally, Carroll’s instincts were good; the masterful drawings are inextricably tied to the well-loved story. Kindle 3 cover made out of a thrift store blank journal (99 cents). I removed the pages, lined it with felt, put in a cork pad to cushion it, and added elastic to hold the Kindle in place and hold the case closed. Quick and easy and it looks like a book while I am reading!

DIY Kindle Case From an Old Hardcover Book

DIY Kindle Case From an Old Hardcover Book

(Reposted from: redfishingboat.com/2011/12/diy-kindle-case-from-an-old-ha…)

We were putting things in boxes for the Salvation Army before the holidays when my brother, Rick, commented how this book could make a nice gadget cover. I agreed, and we set it aside. This week I picked up a strip of balsa wood and some elastic from ye olde craft store and voila. I pulled out the pages and sealed the seam with some gaffer tape. Used wood glue to affix the some rails to the edges. I pasted in a page from the book that I liked just for grins. I found a foam sheet laying around from some Christmas gift and used a glue stick to stick some protective strips on. I don’t love how the foam strips look with the book page. Next time I might just put a full sheet of the foam on the inside cover. I used glue to put in the elastic strip. I considered putting an elastic strip around the outside of the book, like how Moleskines do, but I didn’t want to mess with the color of the book’s cover. Maybe if I were doing this for real I could dye the elastic?

Anyway, thanks to Rick for the idea, and to Blanche Saunders for writing the book — I sacrificed a good read to make this

I haven’t had time to really test and mess with this app, but I was
surprised there wasn’t the ability to purchase books directly thru the
app. You have to go to an Amazon Kindle website to get books, etc.

How long until Apple puts this content in the iTunes store?

Latest A Tale of Two Cities Review

A Tale of Two Cities

A Tale of Two Cities

Novel by Charles Dickens, published both serially and in book form in 1859. The story is set in the late 18th century against the background of the French Revolution. Although Dickens borrowed from Thomas Carlyle’s history, The French Revolution, for his sprawling tale of London and revolutionary Paris, the novel offers more drama than accuracy. The scenes of large-scale mob violence are especially vivid, if superficial in historical understanding. The complex plot involves Sydney Carton’s sacrifice of his own life on behalf of his friends Charles Darnay and Lucie Manette. While political events drive the story, Dickens takes a decidedly antipolitical tone, lambasting both aristocratic tyranny and revolutionary excess–the latter memorably caricatured in Madame Defarge, who knits beside the guillotine. The book is perhaps best known for its opening lines, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” and for Carton’s last speech, in which he says of his replacing Darnay in a prison cell, “It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known.” — The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of LiteratureNovel by Charles Dickens, published both serially and in book form in 1859. A few nice Kindle Store images I found:

Kindle
Kindle Store

So I’ve had my kindle for a couple of weeks now what do I think about it.

Well size wise it’s about the same size as a paperback but an awful lot thinner. It seems quite well put together and should last a while, the buttons seem to be well-made.

The text is really clear and easy to read the contrast is stunning and the matte screen mean it’s really easy to read in dim light and in really direct sunlight – it shouldn’t reflect to much. The text size is good on the smallest size and goes to really quite large print.

Turning pages causes the screen to flash black as the next page is drawn, I don’t think this is particularly annoying although others disagree !

I’m currently getting most of my books from the Gutenburg project and using Calibre to manage the books. Then simply copying to the kindle over USB.

The wireless coverage in the UK seems pretty good and the amazon store whilst a little slow is pretty good and the ability to browse amazon on my mac and have the books wirelessly delivered to my kindle is very cool – although I’ve yet to try this I assume it works.

Now all I need is a nice bag for it, luckily I know of a good bag maker.

New Bound In Darkness (A Vampire/Werewolf Romance) Product Review

Bound In Darkness (A Vampire/Werewolf Romance)

Bound In Darkness (A Vampire/Werewolf Romance)

Hunter…

When it comes to killing vampires, werewolf Cade Thain is the best slayer in the Northwest. So when a witch hires him to take out a pureblood vamp, the assassin thinks it will be just business as usual. One less vicious vamp on the streets…one more undead parasite gone from the earth. Then he meets her.

Protector…

Allison Gray isn’t the prey that Cade expects. Beautiful, innocent, she stirs a dark desire within him. Allison hasn’t transformed fully into a vampire, not yet, and it’s Cade’s job to make sure that she never does. Allison thinks that he’s at her side to keep her safe, but Cade is supposed to pick the right moment–and kill her.

Lover…

Killing Allison is soon the last thing that Cade plans. As she begins the transformation that will turn her into a vampire, her bloodlust and their desire merge in an explosion of need that neither can control. But Allison’s enemies are closing in, and the coming battle will take Cade and Allison beyond life, beyond love…and into a deadly darkness that waits to claim them both.

BOUND IN DARKNESS.

Warning: This novella is a sexy paranormal romance. As such, it contains blood, sex, vampires, and a hot alpha werewolf. Violence and adult language? Yes, those are included, too. (Word Count: 21,000)

Note:  Cynthia has two other BOUND novellas that are also available from Amazon.com: BOUND BY BLOOD and BOUND IN SIN are 0.99 each.
