My laptop is finally on its last legs, and that means I had no choice but to get a new work computer today. Naturally, I went with the best. A MacBook Pro? Pshaw! Like I’m going to burn all that hard-earned money on a slab of metal and a gussied up Linux build. I got an HP HDX. For 0. Same CPU, same RAM, same graphics card, same LED-backlit screen as an 00 MacBook Pro. Even a glowing logo on the lid.

It’ll be about two weeks before the rig is built and shipped, so I’ll have to find a way to keep my laptop sputtering just a little longer.

I’ll post more of my thoughts in the near future… This just replaced my 52" Samsung LCD this week.

I went from a 52" Samsung 580 series LCD (60Hz model that I sold to a friend) to this. One word — wow! I’m re-watching my blu-rays again.

PROS:
(1) Colors are vivid with great contrast, images really pop, deep blacks. Perfect set for a bright living room where you can’t restrict all ambient lighting. Almost brutally sharp images.
(2) 120Hz motion compensation, judder, etc., are adjustable on a scale of 1-5, so it’s not an all-or-nothing proposition. You don’t have to end up with video cartoony-type 3D images, and you can tone the effects down. Lots of adjustment options.
(3) Aesthetically pleasing — incredibly thin.
(4) Minor point, but the cleaning ‘chamois’ they provide has improved, and is slightly ‘grippier’. With my 580 series Samsung, the cloth was smooth, and I was more pushing the dust around than lifting it off.

CONS:
(1) The sound is probably decent enough for TV watching in a quiet environment. I’m not picky about sound coming from a TV, but I really do turn my receiver on all the time now. If I was wall-mounting this, I might get consider a sound bar. OTOH, as thin as this is, I’m not surprised that sound volume/quality is a trade off.
(2) The bigger problem for me is that the remote sensor appears to be just below the Samsung logo in the lower center of the TV. It’s mostly blocked by my center channel, so I have to lift my arm above my head to angle the remote so that it works. Clearly I have to find a better long-term answer to this, like wall-mounting, or a lower-profile center channel
(3) Some people have complained of backlighting unevenness. Is it there? Yes, but not noticeably so IMO, and my last Samsung had a similar problem. OTOH I’m buying thinness so I can deal with a bit of lighting unevenness that is hard to notice in my really bright living room. The really bright screen (compared to my old LCD) really does help in my living room — I have floor-to-ceiling windows. With my old LCD, the colors always looked a bit washed out during the day, even with most of the blinds drawn.
(4) Piano-black finish picks up dust every few hours

ON-THE-FENCE
InfoLink — don’t know that I care for this stuff, since I have way too many ways of checking the news and weather already (laptops, iPhone, Blackberry) – who needs another? But, it’s there and it seems workable. Personally, I wouldn’t pay extra for enhanced internet features, like Yahoo Widgets in the higher-end models.
