The Pentax K1000 (originally marked the Asahi Pentax K1000) is an interchangeable lens, 35 mm film, single-lens reflex (SLR) camera. It uses a horizontal travel, rubberized silk cloth focal plane shutter with a speed range of 1/1000 second to 1 second, along with Bulb and a flash X-sync of 1/60 second. It is 91.4 milimetres tall, 143 mm wide, and 48 mm deep. It was finished in black leather with chrome trim only. However, the early production Pentax K1000 SE bodies had brown leather with chrome trim.

The K1000′s extraordinary longevity makes it a historically significant camera, despite its very ordinary design. Although the K1000 was already obsolete when it was first released, its inexpensive simplicity was a great virtue and earned it an unrivaled popularity as a basic but sturdy workhorse, particularly suited to educating inexperienced photographers. The Pentax K1000 eventually sold over three million units.

This was a birthday present from my mum, and my introduction to the K-mount lens system. It seems to be in "as new" condition, despite being twenty years old.
The SFX (SF-1 in US), dating from 1987, was the world’s first auto-focus SLR with built-in TTL auto flash.

As a rugged (heavy!) prosumer camera, the specifications are impressive.
Exposure modes: Programmed AE, aperture priority, shutter priority, metered manual. Metering range EV1-EV20 at ISO 100 with 50mm f/1.4 lens. Exposure compensation EV-4 to EV+4 in half steps.
Shutter: B (up to 7 hours!) to 1/2000s (the fastest I own). Flash sync at 1/100s.
Lens mount: Pentax KAF. (Can accept all K-mount lenses, and M42 with an adaptor.)
Lens supplied: 35-70mm zoom (with macro), max aperture f/3.5. (This is actually a highly-rated kit lens, but I also own a longer zoom and a 28mm prime).
Focusing modes: AF single, AF servo and Manual. Autofocus in approx 0.3s. Minimum distance 0.7m. Spotbeam for low light to 4m.
Viewfinder: Pentaprism with diopter adjustment. 92% field of view. Features LED for focus, exposure, shutter speed, flash readiness.
Other features: External LCD with all the info you need, self-timer, auto-wind (1.8 fps) and rewind of film, flash guide number is 14m at ISO 100, requires 1 x 6V lithium battery, weight: 665g (without battery).

I like the feel of this camera and the range of functions is more than I’ll ever need. The mirror slap is quite hefty, and the autowind reminds me of the intro to Duran Duran’s "Girls on Film". I much prefer it to the Canon EOS 1000FN and the Pentax glass produces better results.

I think you can pick them up for about 20 quid if you’re patient. The lenses can cost more than the body.
