You can use a service to run in the background, without interfering with what you are currently doing, or you can use a service to run in the foreground where you will be aware of what it’s doing.

Android Services made easy, part of the Android for beginners series of eBooks, simplifies the Official Android Documentation, making it very easy to learn how to use services.

Android Services made easy is divided into two parts, Part A, which covers the theory of services and Part B, which has 6 tutorials explaining line-by-line how to apply the theory in practice.
