Birmingham IMAX Tour – The Front of the IMAX Projector
Projectors

The front of the IMAX projector. This is where the film goes in and works it’s magic!

Once it’s running, there’s a black cover that gets put over this and around the lenses.

In the background you can see the 35mm projector (for trailers) and above it, the data projector (for the PowerPoint presentation.

How LCD Projectors Work (Part 1 of 2)

This is part 1 of 2 showing how a typical LCD projector works, using a projector from a used up rear projection TV. You will see how the optical system works in this part, from the special mirrors used to let some color light through, but reflect others, and the lens systems which produces light uniformity, as well as tinted lenses to help true up some colors. Part 2 will continue with the image assembly, including the projection lenses, the prizm that combines the three colors of the displays, to the output cast on a wall.

Birmingham IMAX Tour – IMAX GT Projector
Projectors

The IMAX GT projector. The pipes going into the roof are to cool the overall projector and bulb. The thick one is air, the smaller ones are water. The room next to the projection room has a full pump system including a dedicated feed of water, separate to the normal city water system.

The Xenon bulb inside costs £3,500 (yes, three and a half thousand pounds), and comes from Belgium. It lasts 900* hours, so it does need to be replaced fairly often. They used to source the bulbs from the US but their ones have a shorter lifespan (though they were a bit cheaper).

To the left a bit, you can see the 35mm (standard cinema film) projector, which is used mostly for advertising and trailers before the movie. On top of that is another generic office projector, which is used for displaying the "welcome to the IMAX" PowerPoint show that shows upcoming films, and so on.

*I think it was 900 hours. It might be 600 hours. I can’t really remember what Sally (our "tour guide" of sorts) said, but I’m fairly sure it was 900.

Projector, DVD Player, and FM Transmitter

Obviously, this needs some work. The DVD player, the projector on an old milk crate, and the FM transmitter that a friend bought for our drive in movie project. The sound is pretty good broadcast to a boom box at the foot of the bed.

Projectors lost at the subway station…
Projectors

Two classic 35mm movie projectors, donated by Paramount Pictures to the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority in 1999, grace the Metro Red Line subway station at Hollywood and Vine. I can’t say whether the projectors were received that way or over ten years of vandalism took its toll, but the projector and soundhead door windows and the illuminated Peerless Magnarc nameplates — all with great vintage silkscreened logos — are missing on both machines.

The plaque on the base inaccurately identify these machines as “1930s Peerless projectors.” Mouse over the notes on the right-hand machine for a better explanation.
