Universe, Energy & SETI Friday November 30th, 2007 Coast to Coast AM Theoretical physicist Dr. Michio Kaku joined Art Bell for a discussion on a variety of topics, including dark matter, alternative energy, and the SETI program. Kaku described the universe as “overwhelmingly dark,” noting that dark matter makes up about 73% of the total matter/energy content of the universe and is increasing. As this “runaway mode” continues, the stars will move farther apart until Earth’s night sky appears completely dark. Trillions of years from now, Kaku speculated, we will likely freeze to death here unless we can travel to a younger parallel universe. Kaku commented on the automobile industry, plug-in hybrid and fuel cell cars, as well as alternative energy sources. He believes a hydrogen economy will be viable when the rising price of oil meets with the falling price of solar/hydrogen power. Kaku also discussed global warming doomsday scenarios, the dangers of nuclear (fission) power plants, and the potential of ‘hot’ fusion reactors, which he imagines could be operational by 2030. Regarding SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence), Kaku expressed excitement over the new Allen Telescope Array, built in part by money donated by billionaire Paul Allen. The planned 350-dish array will increase search scans by a factor of 1000, he explained. Destination Doha – 1977 – The Difficult Bit? – Part 3 Part Three of the second of two documentaries on lorries that travel from England to the Emirate of Qatar. Documentary about the lorry drivers who go from London to Doha in Qatar, encountering snow, breakdowns and police hold ups along the way.
The story follows Kurt Sloan, a cornerman for his brother Eric (Dennis Alexio), an American kickboxing champion. Kurt and Eric travel to Bangkok to take on Tong Po (Michel Qissi), the Thailand champion. However, Kurt and Eric quickly discover that they are outmatched by Tong Po after the first round. However, Eric is too stubborn to give up and returns for round two despite Kurt’s urging not to. Eric continues to take a vicious beating, prompting Kurt to throw in the towel. Rather than stop the fight, Tong Po continues and brutally paralyzes Eric in the ring. Kurt vows to avenge his brother and defeat Tong Po in the ring, and goes to a remote area in Thailand to train with a famous trainer, Xian Chow, who helps him master the art of Muay Thai (“Thai boxing”). As he becomes more and more powerful, local Thai mobsters worry that he’ll interfere in their work in underground kickboxing and force him into a death match against Tong Po. In what they call the “ancient way” the contestants wrap their hands in hemp rope, coat the rope with resin, and then dip their hands in broken glass to make their hands deadly weapons. In an epic final battle Tong Po and Kurt face off, and in the end Kurt beats Po, victory and vengeance now his.
